Worse than that - when the customer investigated more closely they found that some SSDs had failed in a way which had not been detected by the RAID controllers. He (David Flynn) said one organization (which he named) had installed RAID systems using Intel SSDs in a high performance environment.Ībout half the SSDs had "burned out" after a year. they havent been making them for 54 years have they Which doesnt explain in the other place, some of the people noted that when the SSD drive fails it just comes out as a system error. This guy says they last 2 Million, and manufactures have quoted 5 million. I see, so the percentage tossed up there is by some 3rd party software that just takes the numbers it has, assumes a max number of cycles. Then as my last analisis Only 1T of data and its 1/3rd goneīut i wouldnt claim to have completly understood it all yet, i am waiting for that to reach 0 and for you to tell It is all about how many times the cells have actually been changed up, you could do a lot more reading of it and less writing and be ok. It really doesnt look so bad, I quickly figured That one could have run for 1/2 a year 12 hours a day, and will make it 3 more of them making it more than 1 1/2 years.Ī hard drive spun up for 3-4 years for 24 hours a day would also be dead. Because they are used in blocks, one bleeding paw will mean the whole cat is dead anyways It can't be factually determined when a cell will actually fail, because each charged gate is a sort of Schrödinger's Cat, we know it will die, but it could also live for years longer. lots of this stuff depending on the controller, spare space they have for setting out EOL areas, type of data consistancy checking. Then Wear-Leveling features, discontinue the use of sections of cells, and uses the fresh ones instead, so the wear is balanced. ![]() Eventually many sections will be logged out and a Smart error (on supported systems) will pop up warning you of impending doom, even though many sections of it are still in very good shape. ![]() the data is then written in a good location taking a bit more time to do so, and you go on. seen with parity check or something, and those cells or whole blocks are then logged out so they are not used. From what i understand (so far) various cells will no longer read back what was written correctally.
