To many American audiences, dramatic moments like this in an action movie can feel uncomfortably earnest. Cruise and Thandiwe Newton have electric chemistry from their first scene together, an unforgettable sequence at a party in Seville that culminates in a quintessential John Woo moment: two cars spinning around each other in slow motion like a pair of dancers on a ballroom floor.
